<image:title>Exhibitions - Moon Room</image:title>
<image:caption>Narwhal Projects Group exhibition curated by Kristin Weckworth 2014 Moon Room Text by Kristin Weckworth Exploring multiple planes of perspective, Moon Room invites contemplation on synchronous narratives through the creation of parallel installations – this is a room to view a moon and this is a moon that reflects on a room. The exhibition begins inside a bedtime ritual, an ode to ‘Goodnight Moon’ (Margaret Wise Brown/Clement Hurd 1947). Depicting far and near sides of the natural satellite, and the transition from light to dark, the room acts as a place of preparation for the transition into darkness. Through a series of objects, images, patterns and planes created by eight artists and abstracted from the book’s illustrations, the room leads us through a procession of moments ending with an open window revealing a night sky. Stepping through the window, the room is left behind and the Moon is introduced. Combining elemental energies, personalities and practices, thirteen artists unite in creating a shared vision of the Moon. Presented as both a collective galaxy of moons that can be viewed on a large scale from different sides, and as individual celestial bodies floating in space, the Moon offers intimate moments of reflection from far and near, exploring its existence from visual reference, spirituality and scientific phenomena. Originally imagined in response to the conspiracies considered in the film Room 237, Moon Room acts as an alternative reality to the messages perceived to be hidden inside more obvious narratives. Expanding on this process of analysis, an implied connection has been made between two fabricated interiors, unifying staged installations from which to launch a larger metaphorical message. Just as The Shining is said to hold the secrets to various confessions, “Goodnight Moon” has been the subject of several analysis’ linking it to mortality, politics, capitalism and a the evolution of time. Within the Moon, there is the revealed face and the unknown, a set of intangible simultaneous experiences. Within scientific research, multiple versions of the Moon’s truth are presented and from the mythos of our ancestors yet another series of truths are presented. At any given moment there are dozens of conflicting truths being presented on every level. As there are countless perspectives experienced by each individual at every moment, and countless faces put forth and hidden, it leads to the conclusion that there are an infinite number of truths happening at the same, an infinite possibility of parallels that can be drawn between two seemingly unrelated narratives. Deciding what to believe is left to the discretion of the viewer. Moon Room acts as a holder of possibilities and hidden meanings, a physical example of the myriad faces that can exist amongst those presented and masked.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - Visitors (6)</image:title>
<image:caption>Gallery 295 Curated by Patryk Stasieczek and Michael Love Aug 28th - Dec 5th 2015 Visitors Text by Patryk Stasieczek Moving from a sculptural practice into a two-dimensional image, Vanessa Brown presents us with a gestural investigation in the way she builds on her understanding of visual and sculptural planes. In Visitors, we are faced with the monolithic flatness of an image space compounded by the gestural removal of negative space. Substituting a selection tool for a plasma-cutter and a solid colour space for sheet steel, Brown flattens her sculptural practice even further into the photographic plane and presents it at a scale that relates to a sculptural relationship to the body. Brown highlights the sculptural element that the photographic image can claim in how images present physical space as a composition of planes through a certain forced uni-focal perspective. In generating a work for the Light-Box Project Space, Brown recognizes that the tools of digital photographic software mirror those that she uses when working with sculpture. Brown is compelled to leave traces of the tools she used, keeping the gesture of her unsteady hand recorded uncorrected. She does so overtop a series of images taken from a visit to Waimea Canyon, Kauai, presenting the 6th iteration within the light-box itself. On this island Brown takes an understanding of the landscape from her sculptural practice into the realm of the photographic act. For Brown, the monolithic blue void that blocks our view parallels her removal from the scene and her circumstantial inability to enjoy the serene beauty. Brown considers this simultaneous attraction to and removal from a location parallel to the methodological flow of translating a sculptural practice to one that is located in digital photo collage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - The Far Off Blue Places</image:title>
<image:caption>The Far Off Blue Places Projet Pangee Paintings by Anjuli Rathod October 5- November 11, 2017 Exhibition documentation: Jean-Michael Seminaro The Far Off Blue Places Text by Xan Shian Projet Pangée is pleased to present The Far Off Blue Places by Anjuli Rathod (New York) and Vanessa Brown (Vancouver). This exhibition brings together two artists who manifest different versions of a disembodied dream narrative. Evolving from the surreal, their works pry at the abstraction of the everyday through phantasmagoric mythologies of lived experience. Rathod through painting, and Brown through sculpture, create pieces that delve between the material worlds, drawing on the physical nature of gesture to elucidate the intimacy of creation. Rathod’s paintings result from the surrealist process of automatic drawing, which allows her to link directly to her unconscious through memory and self-examination. Coarse, uneven, stylized brushstrokes pull us into a dream narrative, carving distance from realism. Her particular combination of animate subject (even where the inanimate is concerned), brushstroke and colour palette refers us, as the viewer, elsewhere: somewhere which is, as of yet, undefined, and which, more definitely, does not exist solely in the plane of the conscious. Such intentional disconnect roots in Rathod’s interest in diasporic identities, something she tackles through a use of elliptic imagery and animism of space when language is rendered ineffectual. Brown’s sculptures move between the familiar and the abstract, finding liminal space in the everyday. Using metal, she works with multiple flat steel pieces that begin on a singular plane and move to a third dimension as they are assembled. She recreates objects and forms that frequent her subconscious to set the stage for dramatic narratives of things that have just occurred. She contradicts the machinery (both literal and figurative) of metalwork, finding herself “oppositely drawn” to ways in which she can think through her hands. The resulting pieces become amorphous; perspectives that shift significantly as we move between them, each object a fragment of an unknown history. Both series activate planes across all possible narratives; each artist’s work takes on new conversational tropes in context of the other. Brown’s sculptures evolve from their origins to occupy new and perhaps even unintentional paradigms by the time they are complete, while Rathod’s paintings draw narrative loops between characters that are initially unconnected, allowing a story to emerge from the process. For both artists, such processes imbue their works with aspects of the surreal, categorically shifting through time as they become tangible in space. Together the paintings and sculptures hint at intertwining stories: the perfume bottle, the hand, and the orange of Brown’s sculpture draft a scene that might be as dark as it is light; the spider, snake, keys, and question marks in Rathod’s painting accumulate symbols of nightmarish experience which present in contrast to the metallic reflections of the sculptures. Feelings equally sinister and emancipatory are conjured by formal elements evoking beauty. It is these exploratory shapes, the curved, reflective surface of worked metal, colour, and the childlike, which move together in an intimate convergence of impressionistic dream referential.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Penumbra Steel, paint. 2017 Other work by artists: Lari Robson, Yuki Kimura, Anne Low, Derya Akay, Maggie Groat, and Sonnet L’Abbé Dream Islands Nanaimo Art Gallery July 20th - September 17th 2017 Curated by Jesse Birch and Emma Metcalfe Hurst Dream Islands is a group exhibition that takes the work of late Salt Spring Island-based potter Lari Robson (1942-2012) as a central point of inspiration. The exhibition features Robson’s pottery alongside new artworks by Derya Akay, Vanessa Brown, Maggie Groat, Yuki Kimura, and Anne Low, with writing by Sonnet L’Abbé that navigate islands of the imagination through intersections between art and craft practices. As a creator of refined and useful pottery, Robson maintained a devoted and humble practice as an island potter. He sold vases, mugs, tea bowls, lidded jars, casseroles, jugs, serving bowls and other dishware every Saturday at the Salt Spring Island Farmers Market. He made personal and lasting relationships with his patrons and his community, and his pottery continues to be used and treasured in many households on Saltspring Island and beyond. In December 2016, Nanaimo Art Gallery received a generous donation of ceramics from the estate of Victoria-based Curator and Art Historian Diane Carr (1941-2016) which included a unique stoneware jug made by Robson in the 1970s. Jugs are inherently social objects: they constantly empty themselves out through the act of giving. This spirit of reciprocity became a guiding inspiration for the exhibition. For the occasion of Dream Islands, each participating artist was gifted a pot of Robson’s to live with, and reflect on while creating new works for the exhibition. Through a variety of different media including weaving, metalwork, and blown glass the artists employ the materials and labours of craft, but as contemporary artworks, these creations avoid the burden of use. The artworks will be on display in dialogue with a selection of Robson’s pots borrowed from personal and private collections of his patrons, friends, and family, now also liberated from their daily use through new social and aesthetic encounters shared in the gallery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - walking and falling...</image:title>
<image:caption>Erin Stump Projects Paintings by Colleen Heslin March 21 - April 18, 2015 ESP is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of new work by Colleen Heslin and Vanessa Brown. Working in tandem from two separate cities, both artists’ work share an interest in abstraction with echoes of modernism, re-working and cycling material off-cuts into new projects. For each artist, new forms are generated through cutting material, collage, assemblage, and working with both positive and negative space. The material qualities of metal and fabric generate a curious cross over, where metal subsumes a fragility and stretched fabric becomes concrete. The poetic cadence of the exhibition title calls on lyrics from Laurie Anderson, describing walking as repeated gestures of falling and catching yourself in your next step. This lyrical sentiment reflects on both artist’s studio practices and their on-going working relationships with materials in their work. Heslin’s abstract use of domestic fibres mimics a photographic print-like quality, formed with simple dying and staining mechanics, the effect of which prompts questions of digital production. Brown’s metal sculptures possess a paper-like quality in form through construction. Her use of colour brings forward painterly qualities while her forms maintain a tension through her use of layering flat planes. Loosely echoing each other’s process, Heslin and Brown have shared images, patterns, and texts to create work that volleys back and forth across practices and disciplines.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - Shadow Cast</image:title>
<image:caption>Hardscrabble Gallery Curated by Erik Hood March 8 – April 5, 2015 Shadow Cast Text by Erik Hood In the Dream Series, Brown’s use of shapes and mark making of steel, create a very particular texture and effect, with a worked or multiple wash process. Multiple coats of oil paint on the surface of steel, deliver a rich feel, combined with brush strokes, as evidence of the hand in the colouration of the surface. The scale of the works in the exhibition are modest in size, seeking out the traditional sculptural ethos, that el dante point, of balance and form. Conscience of teetering on the edge of monumental works from the high modernist era from the 1960’s and 70’s, Brown bends those ideals of industry and display to fulfill her own autobiographical and representational needs. Sketching by making, Brown’s process has no eraser, no undo. Instead of postproduction, Brown has focused, absolute lines unable to be mended or repaired. The finished products have a spark of chance in their creation. The shapes evoke family crests or coats of arms, scratched into the cover of note books. A relationship to the illustrative or decorative aspects of art making is being worked through. Her aim is not to deliver through the icon, instead leaning on the quality of the line to draw the viewer into initially making connections between the individual figures within each work, then as a whole. Brown could be seen as a steel butcher, slapping down some small cutlets from a larger industry, composed from the pull of gravity and pressing points. The figures and shapes reveal her escaping allusions; forms appear then recess back into the wall. However she subtracts her figures from the support, a very sharp knife is used.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - The Hand of Camille</image:title>
<image:caption>The Hand of Camille Wil Aballe Art Projects Sept 15th - Oct 21st 2016 Ways The Body Can Help The Mind Move Text by Jaclyn Bruneau A woman works in a metal shop. She pulls the door open for air; the sun beats down on the hot parts. “You know, there is a better way you could be doing that.” Men strangers often have input, feel inclined to teach, sometimes read the silent treatment as a communication of intrigue; neither does it occur to them that the forced listener might just already know. The woman operates machinery, cuts metal, designs, figures, follows forms, experiments with finishes; creates objects on a scale proportionate to the strength her body has to wield it. Meanwhile, massive or so-called “ambitiously-scaled” projects continue to be erected across the globe. Working on such a scale is seen to indicate success, financial growth and that the artist sees their work as important enough to not only take up space but all the concomitant labour and garbage. With large artworks come large boxes, come the need to cut large holes into buildings, come many people to unscrew the boxes, count one two three with 100 pounds in their hands on top of a ten foot latter, to deconstruct the structures, to fill containers with the objects, to send the containers overseas, to store the boxes in large places until the cycle repeats. Beyond this adjacent labour of art-making and artist-making is a whole faction of emotional labour that existed long before the economy of intangibles. The physical labour required of Vanessa Brown’s work can be seen as one way to transgress against the frustrating infinitude of such labours that are harder to pin down. Brown is process-oriented, making aesthetic and conceptual choices by way of moving, by compressing the dispersed roles inherent to the making of art objects back into herself, fully. Drawing on one of Margaret Atwood’s metaphors for writing, Brown likens her practice to entering a cave, “not being able to see what is around me, then my eyes adjust and I can see where to go for the next few steps... and then it happens over again I have to wait and look until the forms around me emerge, and then I take a step or two more.” In her book Intimate Revolts, Julia Kristeva starts with an assertion that the world is past the point of no return, or as Hannah Black puts it, “a world dominated visually, ethically, and ontologically by capital, in which long-standing forms of struggle—the protest, the union, the political party, even critique—seem like nostalgic curiosities or reenactments, ultimately doomed to fail.” During such times of decline, “questioning remains the only possible thought: an indication of life that is simply alive,” Kristeva writes, suggesting that hope for the vibrancy of human life lies in individual, small-scale efforts to invoke jouissance. This questioning is manifest in The Hand of Camille, delicate and diffused in its attention to labour, craft and production but rendered so confidently in both material and gesture that we are reminded of the ways the body can help the mind move. Who gets to be The Artist when there are leagues of artists working for other artists? A question immemorial and impossible to ignore given the title’s allusion to Camille Claudel whose agency was never uncomplicated. Her tragically abbreviated life is a hallmark tale for women’s erasure from history, institutionalization as a weapon (against women’s ideas and otherwise) and gender disparity as related to the political economy of the art world. Thus it is seen that beyond Brown’s interest in the hand’s new parlance, her work sidles closer to hands never really made visible to begin with. Look no further than Virginia Woolf’s playful but ultimately grave postulation about Judith Shakespeare, an imaginary sister to the canonical kingpin, asking what if it had been her?, which ultimately translates to: she has lived so many times.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Steel, paint, yarn, suede, cigarette, ash. 2017. Some Spontaneous Particulars: Vanessa Brown, Heide Hinrichs, Kathleen Ritter December 9, 2017 – January 20, 2018 Opening Reception and Publication Launch Friday, December 8, 2017, 7:00 PM In Conversation: Vanessa Brown, Heide Hinrichs, and Kathleen Ritter with Kimberly Phillips with Book Signing Saturday, December 9, 2017, 2:00 PM Some Spontaneous Particulars Curatorial text - Kimberly Phillips 1.a. This project began with my pause over a particularly beguiling passage in Susan Howe’s 2014 book-length poem Spontaneous Particulars: The Telepathy of Archives. It reads: Often by chance, via out-of-the-way card catalogues, or through previous web surfing, a particular “deep” text, or a simple object […] reveals itself here at the surface of the visible, by mystic documentary telepathy. Quickly–precariously–coming as it does from an opposite direction.
If you are lucky, you may experience a moment before. I imagine a telepathic archive: it reaches through the thick opacity of all that has been gathered and catalogued (gathered and forgotten) to disclose itself like a shard of glass. It startles you with its sudden presentness, with its insistent, extrasensory grip. It doesn’t wait to be found, but reveals itself. 1.b. This project began with my indignance over the same passage in Spontaneous Particulars: The Telepathy of Archives. I imagine a telepathic archive: is this idea not buoyed by our incessant longing for things to reveal themselves to us? I feel we await this visitation at our peril. Things do not appear, but must be searched for laboriously. Hauled out. Handled. Carried on. 1.c. This project began with the weariness that accompanies my being a woman. 1.d. This project is an impatient homage. It recognizes its partiality. It queries the implications of retrieval, the ethics of translation. It gathers together women artists whose material handling is a means of bringing form to that which has been passed over, wrongly attributed, or quietly endured. Its choreography is inquisitive and outraged. It posits making as an incomplete act of admiration, persistence and solidarity. 2. Vanessa Brown is a sculptor who works primarily in steel. She attempts to parse its associations with industry, weaponry and brutality from its subtler qualities such as pliability, versatility and slightness. The imagery in Brown’s work draws from a number of sources including landscapes, historical craft, recurring symbols from her own dreams, as well as the biographies and work of other female artists. Her contribution to this project, a new work titled Marianne, considers the conditions under which the German sculptor, designer and photographer Marianne Brandt (1893 - 1983) studied and worked at the Bauhaus. Brandt became the first woman to join the Bauhaus’ metal workshop at a time when women students were relegated to the weaving and ceramics studios, and she became head of that workshop in 1928. Marianne pulls from Brandt’s own lexicon of forms and, like an intimate memoir or portrait, offers elliptical references to biographical details, labour, and the cyclical passage of time through her use of shape and line. 3. Purposely balancing ambiguity and contradiction, Heide Hinrichs’ object-based works tell stories of past emotions, mental states and gestures. In this process she often develops a sculptural language that is structured by the semantic exploration of everyday objects and found materials. For a long while Hinrichs’ focus has been on the work of Korean-American conceptual artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951 - 1982). In particular, she investigates Cha’s magnum opus, Dictée, a genre-defying book known for its highly experimental use of language, polyphonic voice and visual structure drawn from Cha’s own work in avant garde video and performance. Through the voices of several women―including Joan of Arc, the early 20th century Korean revolutionary Yu Guan Soon, Cha’s mother Hyun Soon Huo, and Cha herself―Dictée considers a woman’s struggle to speak, and the many conditions that constrain and twist her utterances. Hinrichs’ work white, floating developed in the context of her translation of Dictée into German. white, floating conjures a mental space through the looping of two video projections: film scenes mentioned fleetingly in the ERATO-LOVE POETRY chapter of Dictée. Facing one another and positioned so closely as to render them nearly impossible to view, except perhaps by the other film scene itself, the projections together create a charged space―at once empty and full―suggestive of the inchoateness of both translation and memory. 4. Kathleen Ritter’s art practice explores questions of visibility and furtiveness, especially in relation to systems of power, gender, language and technology. In a related series of works brought together for this project, Ritter examines the life and work of Mina Loy (1882 - 1966), an artist, inventor, poet and feminist, active in the first decades of the twentieth century. Concerned with the implications of both retrieval and translation, Ritter first uncovers and then brings into material form a number of unrealized propositions drafted on paper by Loy, including the schematic for a modular alphabet and a pattern for dress material. Together with a framed serigraphic portrait reproduced from a 1905 photograph of Loy, and an unlimited edition―printed on newsprint and translated into shorthand―of Loy’s 1914 Feminist Manifesto (a polemical response to the Futurists’ rampant misogyny), Ritter enacts both an homage and a material re-insertion of Loy’s explosive presence into contemporary life. ___ With gratitude as guests, Access is located on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Quickly–precariously–coming as it does from an opposite direction. If you are lucky, you may experience a moment before. This exhibition presents never-before exhibited work by three artists whose research-based practices have drawn them to the work of historical women artists Marianne Brandt (for Brown), Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (for Hinrichs) and Mina Loy (for Ritter), whose own production and memory has been overlooked or stifled within the art historical canon. Presented in dialogue with Beginning with the Seventies: Activism, Art and Archives, a multi-year project initiated at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and curated by Lorna Brown, the object-based works in Some Spontaneous Particulars demonstrate particular concern for a material handling of the past, as a means to query the act and implications of retrieval, the ethics of translation, and consider the radical potential of a feminist archive. * Vanessa Brown works in sculpture, painting and photography. <image:caption>Curated at the Western Front by Pablo de Ocampo The Western Front September 14 - October 20, 2018 Opening September 13 @ 7pm Through the process of working on this exhibition with Brown and Mackenzie over the last couple months, I’ve been thinking about the tension of contradictions in a bog, an ecological terrain that is characterized by having a foundation of peat, which is basically a heap of rotting plant matter. The other characteristic of a bog is that their peaty deposits of decay are the fertile ground that spawns life, a landscape that exists in an natural state of equilibrium. Brown and Mackenzie’s exhibition embraces these contradictions and ambivalences as they imagine the bog as a meditative and regenerative place using their primary mediums of sculpture and sound. Here, Brown revisits the form of the mobile, a structure she’s worked with several times. Brown’s material of choice is steel, a material that seems ill equipped at rendering the soft and damp landscape of a bog. But in a departure from much of her recent sculpture that goes all in on steel as a singular material, the three mobiles that make up Veils of a Bog use the sparest of steel rods to make the skeleton of a mobile upon which hang photographs, ribbon, textiles, organic material, and other elements. Where the mosses, grass, reed, and twigs make these literal and direct representations of elements one might find in this ecosystem, other elements speak to the imagined environment in different ways. Hanging ribbon might be suggestive of an aquatic plant slowly waving in a stream or tufts of usnea dangling from tree branches. Amongst this constellation of objects slowly rotating around on the mobiles are a series of photographs of sculptures, printed on heavy rag paper, mostly depicting gowned women, some embracing infants. The photos are presented cropped and cut up—with the undulating folds of their robes abstracting into waves of hand painted lines on the large format prints. It is significant that these photos were taken at the Bode Museum in Berlin, specifically from their collection of late antique and Byzantine art. While Brown sees these statues of maternal figures as comforting and objects of beauty, she also can’t ignore their place within the history of the Byzantine Empire as tools and representations of imperial power. These sculptures float amidst the multi-channel sound composition Post Meridiem by Michelle Helene Mackenzie. Made specifically for Brown’s sculptures, Mackenzie’s composition consists of two primary elements, that, like the sculptures, sit between literal representation and a more suggestive evocation or abstraction. The first element is a collage of field recordings of frogs, crickets, birds, and other living creatures of the bog. The second is a low frequency drone positioned across four full range speakers and a subwoofer that rest on the floor around the perimeter of the room. The speakers point towards the walls at an upward tilting angle, the drone reflects off the walls, folding back in on the gallery and enveloping the room in an omnidirectional fog of sound. It’s a sound that, even with it’s subtle variations and shifting cycles feels like a uniform substance, a dense substrate like the peaty foundation of the bog. The field recordings are installed to play back across four speakers mounted onto the ceiling, the animal sounds cascade down through the thick bog drone that fills the room. Lasting 26 minutes, Post Meridiem is broken into three movements, with each having its own cycles and rhythms of sounds and relative levels. Crickets float above the soundwaves only to crest and fall back below, subsumed by the din of a low frequency rumble. The bog is disorienting. It’s lit quite minimally, but even when one’s irises adjust to the low light level there is an uncertainty in the space. Brown and Mackenzie repeatedly refer to the bog as a place of ambivalence. There are elements of comfort—the tranquil chirp of the frogs and crickets, the lunar orbs rotating up high like familiar points of light in a night sky, the soft drape of the ribbons, even the warm glow of the lights and the soft bean bags that one can sink into. Within all this, something else lurks that counters feelings of comfort. Hidden amongst the moss and the draped ribbons are sharp metal fish hooks, not directly threatening, but emanating a sense of danger much larger than their subtle form seems capable of. On first encounter, Mackenzie’s composition seem to be on two ends of that spectrum, with the soothing field recordings standing in contrast to the louder ominous tone of the drone. Settling into the space, both sounds embody this ambivalence. As the drone envelops me in the space it feels like a supportive embrace, a protective cloud, and the insistent chirps of the animals suggest an environment where the animals of the bog have taken over and flourished, possibly in the absence of human civilization. That feeling is only further echoed in the photographic reproductions of the sculptures. Floating here in the bog, as fragments, pieces of larger figurative object, one can’t help but wonder how these sculptures ended up here, sunk into the muck. Perhaps this cacophony of animal song is imagining a post apocalyptic world where the bog has swallowed up the physical remnants of human life. All of these bodies and things have now succumbed to decay and in the cycle and balance of the bog, are floating here, decomposing. The detritus of empires broken and sitting amongst the reeds and the grasses, slowly eroding back into the ground from which they were built. And while these descriptions may be painting a portrait of this space as the set for an apocalypse, Brown and Mackenzie’s installation is ultimately a place where the spectre of death and decay is not a threat, but rather a element that sits in a delicate equilibrium with the warm comforting glow of the bog. -Pablo de Ocampo Vanessa Brown would like to thank Tom Hsu (prints) and Joseph Band (metal) for their studio assistance with this project. <image:caption>SLUMBER Patel Brown Gallery Feb 23 - Mar 27 2021 —exhibition text by Godfre Leung SLUMBER, Vanessa Brown’s first solo exhibition with Patel Brown, engages a slowness in the viewer’s eyes. Populated by five ambiguously figurative, larger than life sculptures, the exhibition takes sculptural contour as its point of departure and suggests in its slow forms the heaviness of aging bodies. Mantle, the first sculpture we encounter, provides a visual key to the exhibition. Set against a black backdrop, the wire-like black steel rod sculpture translates line drawing into sculptural form. Its curved contours are slow to appear as our eyes adjust to discern black from black. Its lines also overlap in space and confound depth and volume, contour and silhouette, and even simply foreground and background; as we move around the sculpture, the sculpture simultaneously reveals itself to us and reveals more confoundments. When they do emerge, Mantle’s contours alternately resemble the hunched back of a mourner in a Renaissance lamentation and the asymmetrical sun-worshiping orientation of the ancient Victory Stele of Naram-Sin. These aren’t art historical references, per se, but the residue of historical sculptural shape, marshalled by Brown to speak a body language without directly representing actual bodies. The exhibition’s other four sculptures feature flat painted wood planes with routered cutouts, evoking an elegant languidness in their interplay of contour and silhouette. Two of these figures feature painted patterns—flowers and raindrops, respectively—that rhyme with the sculptures’ contours and the silhouettes created by their cutouts. The effect is something like a slow op art, in which the play of pattern with surface and cavity produces an almost ambient visual pulsation. These two freestanding sculptures also recall the slumping gait of Masaccio’s Expulsion, seeming to labour as they slowly lumber. The two remaining sculptures, both monochromatic, borrow their horizontal orientation from the reclining nude form. To a degree they channel the bodily contortions historically characteristic of reclining depictions of women’s bodies, but with a sense of weight that is wholly distinct from the spineless nudes of art history. Brown’s sculptures collapse curvaceous sculptural contour and freehand drawing, balancing ache and tiredness with grace and rest. Her sculptural body language takes form in indelicate stretching—a not-quite-settled repose. At the core of Brown’s sculptural practice is her work in steel. Her ingenious investigation of shape comes out of her interest in charms and jewelry design as antecedents to her metalwork, and ultimately to her belief in trinketry and heirloom as an alternative economy based on matrilineal wealth. A selection of smaller works in this vein occupies the exhibition’s final room, highlighted by an array of backlit candleholders whose contours run a whimsical gamut between cat’s head, vase, urn, and whale’s tail. Their shadows perform a surreal dance in the darkened room, a dreamlike complement to the weighty solidness of SLUMBER’s large sculptures.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - >>>000/Gravity</image:title>
<image:caption>Curated by Daniela De Fabbro Centre National de l’Audiovisuel Luxembourg May 6 - Aug 20, 2023 Sound commission by Michelle Helene Mackenzie Purple hole animation by Tom Richardson This exhibition was part of a two-person presentation: The Hand That Topples The Tower with Mike Bourscheid >>>000/Gravity Text by Sarah Nesbitt Gravity, gravitas. To have weight. To be held in place. >>>000 / Gravity by Vanessa Brown is an invitation, an affective installation that mediates the tension between the logics that govern our physical world (physics), those that govern our psycho-social space, and the desire to reach beyond both; to eclipse time and space. Three larger-than-life upright projections invite embodied engagement. Reference to the verticality of the cellular phone screen creates immediate experiential familiarity. Akin to scrolling, Brown’s captured and found images move from one into the other, overlayed precisely in a defined video collage. Although possible, the videos are not intended to be watched as discrete elements, but to be experienced in tandem with each other. The audio, a stunning commission by Michelle Helene Mackenzie, is similarly designed as a spatialized experience intended for bodies in motion. Both the photocollage textiles and the moving video collages work with interstitiallity, those spaces between the real and the fantastic, or, as in the case of The Other Sun, the real and the ideal. In the titular video works, snow falls up, and surreal lunar-like landscapes are traced with the camera-eye. Scenes of scuba divers underwater and metalworkers pouring molten metal invite reflection on the solidity of reality, as instances where humans circumvent limitations, find holes to loop through. As a portal between the “governed” world and the impossible, the fantastic, and the liminal one we all coinhabit to greater or lesser degrees, the Looney Tunes cartoon reappears throughout the three projections: as an animated, pulsating portal, or roadrunner unsuccessfully placing his famous black (escape) hole. At one point we watch While E. Coyote paint a road into solid rock. Roadrunner comes upon it unsuspectingly. With this moment of discovery played on loop, Roadrunner is destined to live the instant on repeat, leaving us to wonder if cartoon or real space dictates. Is this escape or entrapment? When I was a kid, I used to have the very real feeling that I could breathe underwater. I was also certain that I lived a whole other life when I slept. This “other me” was completely knowable, I knew her age, how she dressed, where she lived. In >>>000 / Gravity, Vanessa Brown invites us to a world of portals, to contemplate the limits and possibilities of our experience. Most of all she invites us into experience. Imagine breathing iiiiiiiiin and then ouuuuut of a cartoon straw—the kind that, when you suck on it, you inhale the entire sky, and with it, the stars and planets. If you can imagine that, then you might be able to approximate how to say the title, >>>000 / Gravity.

<image:caption>May You Be Welcomed by Good Spirits is an installation and part of Vanessa Brown’s solo exhibition titled Time After Time at Passages Centre d’art contemporain in Troyes, France. May - Aug 2025 Curated by Maëla Bescond In May You Be Welcomed by Good Spirits, Brown draws on research from the historic Apothecary at the Hôtel Dieu-Le-Comte in Troyes. Imagery inspired by the material ephemera at the Apothecary fills the windows of the Wintergarden. The Latin word “Salve,” inlaid in mosaic on the floor—meaning both “welcome” and “healing balm”—became the conceptual starting point for the work in this room. Brown created beeswax diffusers that emit carefully formulated essential oil blends, developed in collaboration with clinical herbalist Niki Boghossian. The work connects historical modes of healing with contemporary herbal knowledge, layering scent, memory, and atmosphere to reactivate the apothecary’s legacy in the present.</image:caption>

And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball." - Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), Caddyshack Minigolf saw a huge rise in popularity in Quebec in the early 90's, making the classic 'mini putt' course a common sight all over the province. Gabias spent many summer evenings playing her hometown's course, chasing the ever-elusive birdie, and eating 'twist' soft-serve ice cream. Seeking to re-create the atmosphere of those summer evenings, Gabias invited artists Vanessa Brown, Steve Hubert and Allie Tweedie to produce THE OASIS, a one-of-a-kind minigolf experience. The artists use a variety of industrial and found materials, from cardboard to concrete, to build a 3-hole minigolf course inside FIELD Contemporary. <image:caption>City of Women, 2023 Commissioned by: RioCan for The Well Consultant: Ashley Mulvihill, Ninth Editions Location: Toronto, Canada When working on this commission, I thought about how volumes can defy the space they are contained by. I wanted to depict how body, landscape and architecture could shift back and forth in terms of perspectives and planes. I thought about the repetition of forms—the arch of the sun, a building, a shoulder; the flat of the foot, the floor, the horizon. I wanted to find a balance between rigid, strict forms and fluidity. There is a sort of rhythm I am trying to achieve in these interlocking shapes like a deity who has their hands on a set of valves which seep, halt, flow forms of image and life. -Vanessa Brown</image:caption>
